ABOUT US

The college was established in 1960 with the subjects Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at undergraduate level by the great visionary Bharamleen Shrimahant Indiresh Charan Dass ji. In 1966 post graduate classes were introduced. Dr. Swaran Singh Tomar was the founder of Head of the Department. During the journey of 60 years Dr P P Painuli, Prof T P Singh, Prof G S Pundir and Prof.(Dr.) A.K. Gupta have rendered their remarkable services as Heads of Department. Presently, Dr. Deepali Singhal is in-charge of the Department since 2020.

Under the supervision of Sajjada Nashin Shrimahant Devendra Das Ji, the department received “Star Department” status from University Grants Commission in the Year 2011. The department received grants of Rupees Twenty two lakhs from Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India, New Delhi under FIST scheme for the development of Chemistry Department. College was accorded CPE status under 2 cycle by UGC, therefore, department is regularly getting grants from UGC and Government of Uttarakhand under RUSA for the procurement of apparatuses, books and development infrastructure.

The department has its own library for P.G. students with nearly 2200 books and 4 Journals. All the faculty members, P.G. students and large number of UG students are members of INFLIBNET.

The various teaching methods include Class room lecture method, paper presentations and interactive sessions in form of quizzes and students are made to prepare projects on the latest and newer trends. Students are motivated to prepare mock lectures, field trips are arranged, and even excursions are undertaken to the research Institutes to expose students to the latest and modern technique. Student centred education is implemented, Methods of teaching through lectures are subordinated with self-study, personal consultation with students and dynamic sessions of seminars and workshops. Whenever required lectures are delivered through computers and computer aided gadgets. The course focuses on helping students to become intellectually sound, disciplined and more focused.

Students are also given counseling regarding competitive examination and job opportunities at the time of notification of various examinations and advertisement regarding jobs. Special classes are taken to detail Chemistry syllabus for various competitive examinations like ICS, PCS, NET etc. Weak students are motivated for remedial classes. Personal counseling is being done individually regarding the problem faced by the students in the college other than the department and sometimes social and domestic problems also.

Intensive collaboration is made between botany and chemistry department of college and with Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medical College of the SGRR University, Dehradun for research and especially in the areas of Biological activity and analysis and to avail library facilities.

Two minor project named “Design, Synthesis, Physico-chemical studies and Biological evolution of novel α-cyano anils and their transition metal complexes towards Biological Activity” and “Development of Novel method of Separation of Deltamethrin and Chlorpyrifos from water samples by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) membranes”  funded by UGC were successfully completed.

The departmental lab has about 30 different types of instruments and some sophisticated instruments.

There is intake of 320 students at UG level in Chemistry and 25 students at P.G. level with specialization in Organic Chemistry under CBCS system.
